Mayberry Comes Alive!
When the dogwood and azeleas are blooming and Spring is in the air, it's time for Mayberry Days in Westminster, South Carolina! Each year during the third weekend in April, historic Main Street comes alive with faces, vehicles and characters known around the world from the 1960s television program "The Andy Griffith Show," which is still in syndication.
A cast of tribute artists - look-a-likes for characters on the TV Show - Barney, Gomer, Goober, Floyd, Otis, Howard, Ernest T. Bass, Thelma Lou, Little Ernest T., Andelina and the gang mingle among festival visitors handing out "tickets" and autographed photos.
The characters, along with several replicas of Mayberry's Ford police cruiser, are also featured in two Mayberry parades held throughout the day on Saturday. Also featured in the parade are pageant winners Miss Mayberry, Junior Miss Mayberry and Mrs. Mayberry
Other highlights of the two-day event include Not Aunt Bee's Kerosene Pickle Contest, Aunt Bea's Picnic, a whistling contest and a salute to Elvis performance on Friday. Saturday features the Rotary Club Pankcake Breakfast, a car and tractor show, a trivia contest and a "Mayberry Moments" performance on the main stage featuring tribute artists as well as some of the original cast members and musicians.
Of course, throughout the event live music is on-going and food and craft vendors sell their wares along Main Street, just as they do for Westminster's fall festival, the South Carolina Apple Festival.
